About Us

Road Scholar is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to inspire adults to learn, discover and travel. Our learning adventures engage expert instructors, provide extraordinary access, and stimulate discourse and friendship among people for whom learning is the journey of a lifetime. Since our inception, more than 5 million people have enrolled in its 5,500 iconic educational adventures offered annually in 50 states and 150 countries around the world.

Originally founded in 1975 as Elderhostel, not-for-profit Road Scholar is headquartered in Boston, Mass., with offices in the U.S, the United Kingdom and Australia.

At Road Scholar we believe lifelong learning isn’t just a hobby — it’s a way of life. We have spent more than 40 years inspiring adults to learn in Road Scholar experiences around the world, and we have invested significant resources in building the network of Lifelong Learning Institutes across the U.S. Our partnership with Lifelong Learning Institutes speaks directly to our mission and our shared passion for enriching educational experiences for adults across the country.

Through the LLI Network, Road Scholar aims to:

  • Increase public awareness of LLIs and the benefits of lifelong learning
  • Direct inquirers to their closest LLI
  • Facilitate curriculum growth and quality
  • Encourage communication and collaboration among LLIs
