We do not have a guideline for loaning computers so far. However, here are some personal opinions.

You should sanitize the computer in between loan outs, both externally (physical surfaces) & internally (security & privacy). Maybe create a guest account and password that could re-created for each loan out.

We have started offering classes using the Zoom online conferencing app. This has minimal hardware requirements (need microphone & camera) and performs best with the Chrome browser.

There’s tons of info on the web regarding loaning computers. If you still need ideas, I would recommend online searches (Google) keywords like:

• loaning computers
• student laptop loan agreement
• computer borrow agreement
• school laptop loan agreement

You are fortunate to have donation of computers and funds. Good luck with your loaning program!

Hi Claire

Do you have an criteria for sharing computers, and would you be able to share the criteria for sharing. We have just received a donation of computers and some funds to buy tablets.

Thank you

Hi Greg,

How generous of your members to donate computers to those in need. I would suggest that before donating a lap top or tablet that the owner make sure that it can support ZOOM or other video conferencing software the Learning Center is using. It would be helpful if the owner cleared the hard drive and loaded and tested Zoom before donating the item to you. A quick search of the internet will provide a wealth of guidelines put forth by libraries who lend equipment. Here is a link to the Niagara Falls City School District computer loan form for review.

Hi Greg, I have been testing Chromebook & Zoom. Seems to work ok. I am in a Zoom meeting this morning but can reach out to you later today or tomorrow. Best way to contact you?
Thanks,
Art

Since our learning center is using video conferencing so heavily these days to deliver classes and programs and since a number of our members do not have computers, several of our members have offered to donate chrome books our organization can loan out to members without their own devices. Does anyone have experience doing anything similar? If so, I'm curious how you have dealt with policy matters such as who should receive them, any limitations on use, dealing with breakage or loss. Also procedural matters such as training or protecting recipients from malware as devices pass from person to person. Also, any suggestions as to what kind of computing device is most suitable in such a situation. Any input most appreciated!

Note: We are a small all-volunteer organization not associated with any college or university. We have limited support capabilities.

Thanks
